To American Feminists

To the American feminism community,

We are at a time when we have a crucial responsibility, as people, as feminists, and as Americans, to understand the diversity of our community better. Fellow feminists, we are doing the hard work to make real change for the women of this country on a range of issues, yet we cannot ignore the hard work that it also takes to truly engage with the diversity of feminists. Feminism is not a one size fits all type of movement; there are nuances that must be addressed and analyzed in order to actually make effective difference. Affluent women and poor women will experience feminism differently, in the same way that white women and Arab women will as well. Taking the example of Arab women, it is unacceptable that we rely on our fellow Arab feminists to dispel the perverse stereotypes that exist about Arab women (primarily due to the media's over-simplistic collapse of what it means to be an Arab woman) because we are too lazy to go learn for ourselves these complexities. There is more to our fellow Arab feminists than solely suppression and oppression, and in order to work with them to more effectively and efficiently study feminism through a complicated and nuanced lens, we must do that hard work ahead of time. Arab feminists have more to focus themselves with than dispelling your stereotypical views.

A letter to American Feminists

To American Feminists, The notion of our veil is a poorly constructed one in American society, especially after the disastrous strike in Sep.11 th , 2001, reflecting the mass misrepresentation of women’s lives in Arab. The media’s popular portrayal of us as universally helpless and dominated by the the patriarchy that continues to exist in Arab culture (as if any society is free of it) has reinforced American perceptions that Arabs and Muslims are degenerate and twisted, thus worthy of domination and bombing.
