To the People of the Rio Grande Valley

To the People of the Rio Grande Valley,

While this detention center has held captive many of my loved ones and people who look like me, I understand that this center has employed many of your loved ones and people who look like you. While your family is just trying to make a living, my people are just trying to live. It is because of people like you that my children have to sleep on concrete floors with aluminum foil blankets. It is because of people like you that children are often times separated from their parents. Your passiveness and reluctance to acknowledge that you are just as bad as those who directly participate in the violence of detention is exactly why immigrant children continue to be sexually assaulted while detained and with no repercussions. It is exactly your passiveness and insistence that this practice is normal for why people like me continue to die in the custody of the US government. To the people of the Rio Grande Valley, I insist you act now on the indecency of your peers working in a system that strongly contradicts the very values that this country claims to be founded on before any more lives are lost.

Sincerely,
 A Fellow Detainee
